Common questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?

Under the new regime, yes — for taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 the Section 87A rebate cancels out the tax completely. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction added on top, a salaried person's gross salary can go up to ₹12,75,000 before any tax is due.

Which regime should I pick?

It depends on how many deductions you actually claim. If your 80C, HRA, and home loan interest add up to a large amount, the old regime often works out cheaper. If you claim few deductions, the new regime's lower rates usually win. Use the comparison above with your real numbers rather than a rule of thumb.

Can I switch between regimes every year?

Salaried individuals with no business income can choose either regime at the time of filing, every year. Those with income from business or profession can switch back to the new regime only once in their lifetime after opting out of it.

Why did my tax jump sharply just above ₹5,00,000 in the old regime?

The old regime's Section 87A rebate cuts off exactly at ₹5,00,000 taxable income, with no smoothing above it — so a rupee more of income can mean thousands more in tax. This is a known feature of the old regime, unlike the new regime, which smooths this transition around its ₹12,00,000 cut-off.
